The Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (PPAO) spends more than 5 million Baht to finance Phuket coral reef protection project. 1,310 concrete blocks has been sunked by The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources into the Andaman Sea off Phuket shoreline to create artificial reef which will protect marine life at Sirinath National Park.
Spanning 20 kilometers long along the coast between the Sarasin Bridge in Mai Khao up north to Nai Yang Bay down the south. In addition to protecting the marine life the artificial reef is expected to grow into a beautiful diving sites in the future.
Officially named Artificial Coral for Her Majesty The Queen, the opening ceremony of the project was chaired by PPAO President, Paiboon Upatising on Tuesday, March 20th.
Head of Sirinath National Park, Charuay Inchan, said that the coral reef which has been an important element of coastline ecology has been severely destroyed. “The wall of concrete blocks will also mark the 3 kilometers zone where fishing, especially by fishermen using trawls, is prohibited as it destroys ecosystems”, he explained.
