It is expected to be completed on December 2011″, Mayor Somjai told the press as reported by Phuket Gazette.

Since it started to be used in 1993 the landfill has deposited million tonnes of garbage. In some area it gets as thick as 15 meters, 10 meters below the ground and 5 meters above. Operated by the government of Phuket Town, both the incinerator and the landfills resort garbage produced by the whole island.
Contracted by Boonchai Panich Co Ltd, the landfill improvement project was started in April 2009. The project extended three landfills to expand their capacity, closed the already-full fourth plot, and rearranged the fifth plot to extend its capacity. As it was completed on May 6th, the landfills got extra capacity of 100,000 tonnes, sufficient space for another one year.
